In September, the Indian government pulled out all stops to mount a PR extravaganza for an environmental project of dubious value: the reintroduction of the cheetah into the country seven decades after it had become extinct. The animals landed in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park on September 17, which was, by complete coincidence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday.

Last week, The Telegraph quoted a source in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, which guards the border with China, as saying that “the Beijing is fortifying its position inside Indian territory it has occupied since 2020, by erecting watchtowers mounted with CCTV cameras at the Depsang Plains and Hot Springs in Ladakh” These areas are 18kms inside Indian lines. The Telegraph reports that China is estimated to have taken over close to 1,000 sqkm of India-claimed territory in eastern Ladakh since May 2020.

In the past month, we have been on the ground in Varanasi to report on the renewed attempts by Hindutva groups to seize control of the Gyanvapi mosque through a series of contentious court orders. Aishwarya Iyer was the first to point out that the district court asked for a part of the mosque to be sealed even before it had received a survey report. In a detailed piece, Umang Poddar explained the role the lower courts have played in pushing Hindutva claims on mosques. On World Press Freedom Day on May 3, the Reporters Without Borders annual report noted that the Indian media was operating under tighter constraints than ever before.
Scroll.in reporter Aarefa Johari on Tuesday won the 2021-22 Journalism for an Equitable Asia Merit Award for her article on Jharkhand women workers. The award was given by research institute Asia Centre and non-profit group Oxfam.
